Sheffield, autumn 1959, the last winter of the trams: a moneylender falls from the open platform of the last car and dies, and the friendly driver swears the conductor was with him. A poor legal-aid solicitor can hear that his client is lying, but not why, and he will not take the quick plea while the depot's running sheet still hides one timed minute.
